Who should get the 12th spot on the Team USA roster?

According to multiple reports, 11 of the 12 roster spots for Team USA's 2024 Paris Olympics campaign have been finalized. The roster will be headlined by the famed trio of LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant, who will be joined by Joel Embiid, Jayson Tatum, Devin Booker, Jrue Holiday, Anthony Davis, Anthony Edwards, Bam Adebayo and Tyrese Haliburton.

As for the 12th and final spot, The Athletic reports that Clippers star Kawhi Leonard is "the leading candidate" for the vacancy, with Paul George, Paolo Banchero, Mikal Bridges and Jalen Brunson also under consideration. The report added that Durant and James prefer Leonard to make the squad.

From a basketball fit perspective, Leonard or Banchero would make the most sense due to their ability to play multiple positions and defend at a high level. Besides Tatum, none of the 11 confirmed players fit that criteria. While James and Durant are in the latter stages of their career and struggle to play consistent defense, Holiday — the best defender on the team — would likely be playing backup to Curry.

Brunson — who has emerged as a personal favorite of Team USA head coach Steve Kerr — could end up being overlooked due to the guard-heavy roster that already includes Curry, Holiday and Haliburton.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Team USA officials have mulled over keeping one roster spot open for now. With Leonard and several other stars dealing with nagging injuries, one wonders if Team USA officials are waiting for the NBA Playoffs to shake out before making a final call.

Team USA's training camp for the 2024 Olympics gets underway on July 5 in Las Vegas. The squad will open its campaign against Nikola Jokic's Serbia on July 28.
